Alcohol Dilution Calculator — how to mix spirit with water

This calculator works out how much water you need to mix with a spirit to reach the strength you want. Drag the sliders or type the amount straight into the box next to each slider. It also handles mixing two liquids that both contain alcohol — spirit with vodka, for example — so you can use it to work out the strength of a blend, not just a dilution.

There is exactly as much alcohol as before mixing — only the volume holding it has shrunk. The strength comes out at 40,0%, which is precisely what we wanted.

Alcohol-based hand sanitiser

Ready-made proportions for diluting spirit down to a sanitising strength. Clicking one loads it into the calculator, so you can change the amounts to suit you. You can dilute with something other than water — 40% vodka works too.

99% spirit (0.5 L) plus 0.228 L of water gives 0.707 L at about 70%. 95% spirit (0.5 L) plus 0.197 L of water gives 0.679 L at about 70%. 90% spirit (0.5 L) plus 0.157 L of water gives 0.643 L at about 70%. 85% spirit (0.5 L) plus 0.117 L of water gives 0.607 L at about 70%. 80% spirit (0.5 L) plus 0.078 L of water gives 0.572 L at about 70%. 99% spirit (1 L) plus 0.457 L of water gives 1.414 L at about 70%. 95% spirit (1 L) plus 0.393 L of water gives 1.357 L at about 70%. 90% spirit (1 L) plus 0.313 L of water gives 1.285 L at about 70%. 85% spirit (1 L) plus 0.235 L of water gives 1.215 L at about 70%. 80% spirit (1 L) plus 0.156 L of water gives 1.143 L at about 70%.
